While the world of mobile phone handset technology is littered with rumours and counter rumours, the latest offerings suggest that Dell are on the trail of the Apple iPhone with very strong signals that they will be launching a new Phone in early 2008, something which could blow the iPhone out of the water. But what will it offer?
While Dell are best known for their computer business which continues to go from strength to strength, they have also been involved in portable music players and PDAs, however intriguingly they recently announced plans to pull out of this market. It seems that they are looking to bring all of their PDA, portable music and computer expertise together in one mobile phone to blow away the competition.
The interesting thing about this development is the history and past strategies of Dell, and the fact that unlike many manufacturers who spread their net very wide, Dell have a habit of highlighting interesting markets and putting all of their efforts into specific projects. It seems that they believe the Apple iPhone may have tapped up a market which they can exploit with a better handset, thus claiming major market share from Apple.
While Apple have had it all of their own way for some time, it seems that there will soon be a new kid on the block, and a kid with experience, expertise and pockets which appear to be deeper than the ocean. Ding, ding, round one...............
