The Sanyo Zio is an Android 2.1 operating system with reasonable performance and appreciable feature set but the data speeds are slow when compared to other smart phones. Also, the speaker phone was not clear and produced lot of noise. The phone comes with a low price tag of $99 for 2-year contract with Sprint along with mail-in rebate of $100 and would cost $349 without a contract.
The design is very good with touch screen display and intuitive controls. The WVGA display measures 3.5 inches diagonally with resolution of 800×480 pixels and supports up to 262,000 colors. The phone measures 4.6×2.3×0.48 inches and weighs approximately 3.7 ounces. The detailed edges and smooth finish of the phone makes it really good. It has external controls including micro-USB port for charging, volume rocker and 3.5mm headphone jack on left spine. There is a microSD slot on right spine and phone comes packed with 2GB microSD card. The virtual keyboard is the default Android keyboard and there is no change with it.
The virtual keyboard, phone dialer and main menu is all same as standard android phone and with some customization options. The “D” touch control which is present at display’s bottom right can be used to change the default sprint ID. The camera lens is present on rear side near the speakers. The 3.2 megapixel camera is very good for pictures and video recording. It has USB port, GPS, music player, PC syncing, speaker phone, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, voice commands, e-mail and messaging, access to Android apps market and other default Android apps which are pre-installed in the phone. The photo quality is decent with the camera and call quality is also great with no interference and perfect clarity. But speaker phone was not very good and had some noise. The battery life of the Zio smart phone is quite less with talk time of 4.6 hours. The data speed is less and you can not rely of WiMax speeds when using Sanyo Zio as it was really slow. When you try to access busy websites you will see that it opens very slowly and graphics takes lot of time to load. Hence, Zio opens the mobile versions of all websites by default to save your time. Apart from that, the surfing experience is quite comfortable. The touch screen responsiveness was good and you can enjoy smooth scrolling experience. Overall, this Android smart phone has reasonable call quality and good performance and comes for an acceptable price.
